This book makes a large claim. It declares that the quality and meaning of our lives may be dictated by our relationship with our voice... my willingness to inhabit my voice is a major determinant of a fully lived life. - Foreword by Peter Block

Our voice serves as a bridge between what we wish to say and the listeners. As a communication tool, the voice is intimate in a unique way. Various studies in the field of non-verbal communication have shown that tone of voice has a substantial impact on our ability to get our message through. The example that is most often referred to is Albert Mehrabian’s 1967 study, where he found that almost 40% of our liking for the person who puts forward a message is affected by their use and tone of voice.
It has never been more challenging to communicate clearly and powerfully than it is now. The chaos, speed, and anxiety in our organizations, communities, and lives makes it seems as though we are trying to talk to each other with a hard-rock band playing in the background.
Your voice is the primary link that connects you with the people around you. You use your voice as much as any other business tool, in meetings, presentations, informal conversations, even in writing. Nothing much happens in the world without someone first giving voice to it. Additionally, new leadership skills, such as the power of storytelling, are emerging as critical to our ability to create a coherent and compelling message.
As important as our voices are, few of us know how to use them to their full potential. Many of us feel self-conscious about how we sound, but don’t know how to make authentic, lasting change in our voices. This gap becomes more important when we realize that every time we speak, our voices reveal a wealth of information about us: our identity, gifts, emotions, and history.
Learning to consciously tap the full range of expression available to you makes it much more likely that your message will reach the minds and hearts of your listeners – in spite of the background noise. And working with your own full voice makes you a more skilful listener as well.
From "Brain Rats" to "The Five Elements," Full Voice offers a memorable, pragmatic, and playful framework for tapping the power of your voice in service to your message. Barbara will introduce you to five distinct vocal sounds and describe how to use each one in your everyday communication. You’ll also look into the mirror of your own voice and discover how it reflects your gifts and challenges. And you’ll never think about voice the same way again.
